April is Rosacea Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to shed light on this condition that affects so many. Let's dive in!
Rosacea is a common skin condition affecting millions worldwide, presenting persistent challenges in symptom management. At Everglow Medical Aesthetics, we deeply understand the struggles individuals face when dealing with rosacea. In this blog, we'll explore this condition, diving into its different types and uncovering common triggers that worsen symptoms. We’ll discuss advanced treatments like LaseMD and IPL, lasers to help with broken blood vessels, topical prescriptions, our Redness Reduction Package, and medical-grade skincare products to help you effectively manage rosacea and achieve healthier, happier skin.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a complex skin condition characterized by a range of symptoms that can affect both the appearance and comfort of your skin. These symptoms may include persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, bumps, and occasionally acne-like pimples.
Typically, rosacea starts with heightened flushing or blushing, which may occur more easily than normal. Over time, these symptoms can worsen, leading to increased redness and the development of visible blood vessels on the face.
In some cases, rosacea can also extend beyond the skin, affecting the eyes and causing symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and inflammation. It's important to recognize the signs of rosacea early on and seek appropriate treatment to effectively manage the condition and maintain skin health and comfort.
Recognizing Rosacea
Recognizing rosacea involves identifying certain common symptoms that typically show up on the face. Here are some signs that may indicate you have rosacea:
Persistent Facial Redness: Rosacea often presents as persistent redness in the central part of the face, such as the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. This redness may resemble a blush or sunburn and can come and go.
Visible Blood Vessels: In addition to redness, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia) may appear on the face, particularly around the nose and cheeks. These blood vessels can give the skin a web-like appearance.
Bumps and Pustules: Rosacea may cause small, red bumps or pustules on the face that resemble acne. These bumps can be tender or itchy and may contain pus.
Flushing and Blushing: Individuals with rosacea often experience frequent flushing or blushing, even in response to minor triggers such as heat, sunlight, alcohol, or certain foods and beverages.
Eye Irritation: Ocular rosacea can cause symptoms such as dryness, itching, burning, and sensitivity to light. It may also lead to inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis) or the cornea (keratitis), resulting in blurred vision or discomfort.
Early recognition and management of rosacea can help prevent worsening of symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

Different Types of Rosacea
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: This type of rosacea is characterized by persistent facial redness, often accompanied by visible blood vessels. The skin may appear flushed or have a reddish hue, and the blood vessels may be more noticeable, giving the skin a blotchy appearance.
Papulopustular Rosacea: Also known as acne rosacea, this subtype presents with acne-like breakouts on the face, consisting of red, pus-filled bumps or pustules. These lesions may be tender or painful to the touch and are often accompanied by persistent redness in the affected areas.
Phymatous Rosacea: Phymatous rosacea typically affects the skin on the nose, causing it to thicken and develop a bumpy texture. Over time, the nose may become enlarged and bulbous in appearance, a condition known as rhinophyma. In addition to the nose, phymatous rosacea can also affect other areas of the face, such as the chin, forehead, and ears.
Ocular Rosacea: This subtype of rosacea affects the eyes, leading to a range of symptoms including dryness, itching, burning, and sensitivity to light.
Spotting Rosacea and Common Triggers
To effectively manage rosacea, it's crucial to recognize and avoid triggers that can worsen symptoms. Here's a rundown of common triggers to keep an eye out for:
Sun exposure: Spending too much time in the sun can make rosacea symptoms flare up. Remember to wear sunscreen and seek shade when it's sunny.
Hot beverages: Drinking hot drinks like coffee or tea can cause flushing and make redness worse. Opt for cooler options instead.
Spicy foods: Foods with spices or hot peppers can trigger redness and flushing in people with rosacea. Choosing milder dishes can help.
Alcohol: Alcohol, especially red wine and hard liquor, can dilate blood vessels and worsen rosacea symptoms. Cutting back on alcohol consumption may help.
Stress: Stress can make rosacea symptoms more severe. Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation to help manage stress.
Harsh skincare products: Skincare products with alcohol, fragrance, or harsh ingredients can irritate sensitive skin and worsen rosacea. Look for gentle, fragrance-free products instead.
By steering clear of these triggers, you can take control of your rosacea symptoms.
Treatments and Products We Recommend
In light of Rosacea Awareness Month, our team at Everglow Medical Aesthetics, led by Robyn, a board-certified licensed Family Nurse Practitioner, is dedicated to shedding light on effective treatments for managing rosacea symptoms and promoting skin health. Here are some insights to guide you:
LaseMD and IPL: These advanced treatments are instrumental in addressing rosacea symptoms. LaseMD and IPL therapies target redness and inflammation associated with rosacea, offering significant improvement in skin tone and texture.
Broken Blood Vessels: For individuals with more severe rosacea featuring broken blood vessels, treatments such as long-pulsed YAG or Skin Classic can be highly beneficial in enhancing skin clarity. The YAG laser reduces redness by targeting visible blood vessels, causing them to disappear over time. Skin Classic comfortably reduces skin irregularities through high-frequency electrical pulses.
Topical Prescriptions and Medical-Grade Skincare: We recommend incorporating topical prescription medications and medical-grade skincare products into your rosacea management routine. These specialized formulations are designed to soothe irritation, reduce inflammation, and promote skin barrier function, improving skin health.
DermaMade Products: For acne rosacea, we recommend DermaMade’s Mediwash cleanser. This gentle yet effective product helps cleanse the skin without stripping its natural moisture, making it suitable for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.
Plated Exosomes: Plated Skin Science is the first and only topical skincare product harnessing the power of platelet-derived exosomes. (plated) SkinScience contains trillions of regenerative exosomes rich in proteins and enzymes providing a natural defense against the signs of aging. Plated has also been shown to be very effective in treating rosacea (see below)

ZO Skin Normalizing Kit: The ZO® Skin Normalizing System is a complete selection of products for red, sensitized skin. This system features Rozatrol®, a multi-modal serum for red, sensitized skin. FMI see: https://zoskinhealth.com/us/shop/by-solution/redness/
Jane Iredale: To conceal redness associated with rosacea, Robyn suggests using green-tinted products, such as those from Jane Iredale. Green-tinted primers or color correctors can effectively neutralize redness, providing a more even skin tone for seamless makeup application.
